KYIV. Oct 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The work plan for 2024-2025 in pursuance of the memorandum of understanding on bilateral cooperation was signed on Monday by the Ukrainian National Office for Intellectual Property and Innovations (IP office) and the EU Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) during the visit of the EU delegation led by EUIPO Executive Director Joao Negrao to Kyiv.
“The plan… opens up the possibility of including data on Ukrainian trademarks and industrial samples in the EUIPO databases, which are the largest in the world and number more than 115 million trademarks and more than 20 million industrial designs from five continents,” says a press release from the Ministry of Economy.
It is also expected that IP Office will receive support from the EU in matters related to the legal protection of trademarks and industrial samples, including issues of IP rights protection.
In addition, as part of the work plan, IP Office will take advantage of EU support in harmonizing Ukrainian practice of registration and examination of applications for trademarks and industrial designs with EU practice. Such harmonization should allow Ukrainian businesses to more easily operate abroad.
As part of broader EU initiatives to deepen the integration of IP Office into the EU intellectual property (IP) system, an international IP cooperation project involving Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia is also being discussed.
It is clarified that this was the first foreign visit in the new position of EUIPO Executive Director Joao Negrao.
EUIPO is one of the largest decentralized EU institutions, located in Alicante (Spain). The EUIPO registers EU Trademarks (EUTM) and Registered Community Designs (RCD), which ensures that the relevant intellectual property can be legally protected in all EU member states. The office also cooperates with national and regional EU intellectual property offices and coordinates the activities of the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights.
