Alternative sources to provide up to 77% of Trostianets energy needs – master plan

KYIV. May 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The concept of restoration and further development of Trostianets’ energy systems proposes a gradual abandonment of gas flaring at power plants, said Andreas Helbl, managing partner of CES Clean Energy Solutions, presenting the developed master plan.

Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers identified six settlements where the restoration will take place in a comprehensive manner and according to new principles. Among them is Trostianets (Sumy region), the master plan of which was recently presented to the public.

The master plan for New Balance Trostianets was prepared for the Trostianets City Council by CES clean energy solutions GesmbH (Austria), iC consulenten Ukraine, tbw research (Austria) and Modul5 (Austria) with the support of independent experts: Peter Hannes, and Madis Maddison. Its development went from June 2022 to February 2023. The infrastructural part of the master plan covers five areas: landfills and a waste processing zone, water and drainage, wastewater, energy and heat supply.

“Electricity and heat supply networks in Trostianets are partially destroyed. The concept of further development of energy systems is the same as in Eastern and Central Europe, a gradual abandonment of gas flaring at power plants is proposed. Taking into account the urban development concept of the city, two separate strategies for district heating have been developed for the periphery and the center,” Helbl explained.

According to him, thermal generation using biogas is promising for the center, individual heat pumps are offered for private houses. It is also proposed to build a large SPP on an available land plot of 13.5 hectares, plus the placement of solar panels on more than 1,000 roofs of private houses. According to the developers of the master plan, two such stations as a whole are capable of providing up to 77% of the needs of the city.

“In the longer term, we see an opportunity for better self-sufficiency of the region and the city through the processing of agricultural waste. This can be biomass or biogas. Territorial communities around Trostianets can also join this project,” the managing partner of CES Clean Energy Solutions said.

The Master Plan also proposes to rebuild the current landfill into a more modern and better organized one for waste collection and recycling.

When developing the concept of water supply and drainage, wastewater treatment, information was analyzed on the degree of damage and the features of the functioning of these networks. Both the restoration of the existing infrastructure and the connection of now isolated networks are proposed. It is also advisable to build a new wastewater treatment plant. Two options for its location are discussed.

Andreas Helbl looks forward to attracting international and private investment in these programs.

A detailed plan for the implementation of the proposed measures to upgrade infrastructure systems has been developed until 2050. Water supply/sewerage infrastructure requires investments in these projects of EUR 105.93 million, and waste management – EUR 19.6 million. The recommended scenario for energy generation, heating and supply of warm water is EUR 18.827 million, and investments in solar power plants are EUR 11.125 million.
