KYIV. May 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Berlin Administrative Court lifted a ban on the display of Ukrainian flags on Soviet memorials in the Treptow, Tiergarten and Schoenholzer Heide districts, which was previously announced by the police of the German capital, the Berlin edition of rbb reported, citing the Ukrainian organization Viche, which appealed the ban.
“On Friday evening, the Administrative Court of Berlin lifted the ban on hanging Ukrainian flags at the Soviet memorials of Treptow, Tiergarten and Schönholzer Heide. This was reported by the Ukrainian organization Viche,” rbb said on the website.
May 8 and 9 mark the 78th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. To ensure “dignified remembrance of the fallen soldiers of the former Soviet army”, the Berlin police imposed a ban on the display of Russian as well as Ukrainian flags and the march of music around Soviet memorials.
In Friday’s court decision, only Ukrainian flags and marching music are discussed – Russian ones remain banned.
The court ruling, which rbb has in its possession, reportedly said that the Berlin police’s decision to ban the Russian and Ukrainian flags was “clearly illegal” and they did not provide “any evidence that public safety is at risk.”
