Destruction of Kakhovka HPP did not affect energy system operation, there is no threat to power supply stability – Energy Ministry, Ukrenergo

KYIV. June 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The destruction of Kakhovka hydroelectric power station (Dnipropetrovsk region) did not affect the situation in the country’s energy system, there is no threat to the stability of electricity supply, the Ministry of Energy and Ukrenergo said on Tuesday.

As of June 6, the generated electricity is sufficient to cover the needs of consumers.

“Experts from the Ministry of Energy and Ukrhydroenergo are studying the potential impact of the disaster on the volume of hydro generation. The actual level of electricity produced so far corresponds to the planned one,” the ministry said.

It also confirmed the information about the absence of a direct threat to Zaporizhia NPP.

“The situation at ZNPP. Despite the gradual decrease in the water level, there is no direct threat to the occupied plant. Energoatom experts are constantly monitoring the situation,” the ministry stated.

At the same time, due to the blowing up of the dam, there are risks of flooding of energy facilities in Kherson region, in particular Kherson thermal power plant. Due to flooding in Kherson, almost 12,000 consumers in Ostriv district have already been de-energized, and there may be problems with water supply. Preventive anti-crisis measures are being prepared.

In turn, Ukrenergo reminded that Kakhovka HPP was occupied and mined by the Russians from the first days of the aggression. Technological connection with it was lost, power was not delivered to the controlled territory of Ukraine from the station.

“Tonight, the aggressor country committed another act of terrorism at a civilian infrastructure facility, which is a tragedy for our fellow citizens and a large-scale environmental disaster. Ukrenergo will continue to report on the impact of the consequences of the disaster on the state of the energy system,” it noted.

In addition, according to the ministry and Ukrenergo, as a result of the night shelling of the Russians, the networks of regional power companies in Kherson, Kharkiv, Sumy and Donetsk regions were damaged. In Kyiv region, there is damage in the networks of regional power companies due to the fall of debris from a hostile target shot down by Ukrainian air defense.
