BRUSSELS. May 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – An assessment of Ukraine’s progress in fulfilling the requirements as a candidate country for membership in the European Union, which should be given verbally by the European Commission to the European Council in late spring through early summer, is still in the progress.
However, the issue might be discussed during the upcoming visit of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Kyiv on May 9. This follows from the answer of the representative of European Commission Chief Spokesperson Eric Mamer at a Monday press briefing in Brussels to the question of journalists whether this assessment will be the subject of discussion during meetings with the Ukrainian side.
The visit will focus on all dimensions of the EU’s relations with Ukraine, he said, adding that the expansion process is one of those issues.
At the same time, Mamer noted that this assessment still needs to be done for the European Council. He also refrained from giving other details of the visit.
