Moldova plans to temporarily restrict imports of Ukrainian grains, oilseeds

KYIV. May 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Moldova plans to introduce temporary restrictions on the import of grains and oilseeds from Ukraine, its Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry press service has said.

Minister Vladimir Bolea, at a meeting with Head of the EU delegation to Moldova Janis Mazeiks informed about “the intention of the ministry to temporarily apply the measures that some EU countries have introduced on the import of grain and oilseeds from Ukraine.”

According to him, Moldova is preparing a set of measures to maintain the competitive position of the agricultural sector, as Moldovan farmers constantly point out the high cost of their products.

In order to solve this issue, the European agricultural fund for rural development (EAFRD) compensates farmers for the excise tax on used diesel fuel. In addition, the government intends to subsidize the cost of pesticides and fertilizers to farmers.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of providing EU support for the harmonization of agricultural legislation, the preparation of a new Twinning project, the prospects for the implementation of the EAFRD program, TAIEX projects, and others.
