Ukrainian rolled metal market almost doubles in Jan-Oct, share of imports reaches one third

KYIV. Nov 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian enterprises in January-October of this year increased consumption of rolled metal by 94.51% compared to the same period last year, to 2.904 million tonnes.

According to a press release from the Ukrmetallurgprom association, during this period 937,500 tonnes were imported, or 32.29% of the domestic market for rolled metal consumption.

According to Ukrmetallurgprom, in January-October 2023, Ukrainian metallurgical enterprises produced 4.37 million tonnes of rolled metal (87% compared to the same period in 2022), of which, according to the Expert Scientific Council UAVtormet, exported about 2.4 million tonnes, or 55.9%. In the same period in 2022, the share of exports reached 79.7% (4 million tonnes with a total production of rolled metal of 5.02 million tonnes).

The share of semi-finished products in export supplies in January-October 2023 was 43.14%, which is comparable to the figure for the same period in 2022 (44.34%). The share of flat rolled products in export supplies in January-October 2023 was almost similar to the figure for January-October 2022 (37.02% and 37.25%, respectively); a similar picture is observed for long products (19.84% in 2023 versus 19.41% in 2022).

“In January-October 2023, the capacity of the domestic market reached 2.904 million tonnes of rolled metal, of which 937,500 tonnes, or 32.29%, were imports. In the same period of 2022, the capacity of the domestic market was 1.493 million tonnes, of which 475,700 tonnes, or 31.87%, were imported. Thus, in January-October 2023, there is an increase in the capacity of the domestic market in relation to January-October 2022 by 94.51%, with a simultaneous an increase in the share of the imported component by 0.42%,” the association said in the press release.

The structure of imports in January-October 2023 is still characterized by a significant dominance of flat products over long products (75.50% and 24.44%, respectively); in the same period in 2022, the dominance of flat products over long products was also significant (66.16% and 32.69%, respectively).

The main export markets for Ukrainian metal products in January-October 2023, according to Expert Scientific Council UAVtormet, are the countries of the European Union (84.1%) and other Europe (7.3%).

Among metallurgical importers in January-October 2023, the first place is occupied by other European countries (39.9%), the second by the EU-27 (38.2%), and the third by Asian countries (19.7%).
