New national standard for ware potatoes to be into effect on June 1

KYIV. May 25 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A new national standard for ware potatoes has been developed for the first time since independence and will come into effect on June 1, 2023.

Order No. 102 was published on the official website of the state-owned enterprise Ukrainian Scientific Research and Training Center for Standardization, Certification and Quality Problems.

“Adopt the national standard DSTU 9221:2023 Ware Potatoes. Specifications and put it into effect on June 1, 2023. The new standard has been developed for the first time in all the years of independence. It will replace GOST 7176-85 and GOST 26545-85, which were previously in effect in the industry,” the standardization body said on its official website.

According to the new standard, in Ukraine, depending on the harvesting period, they will distinguish between early and late potatoes. Depending on the quality, it is divided into three classes – extra, grade 1, and grade 2. Depending on the use, potatoes can be washed or unwashed.

The national standard writes out the main characteristics of that norm for potatoes, taking into account its variety, which describes the appearance, smell, taste of potatoes and the appearance of its inside. The document indicates the permissible limits of deviations in a single pile of potatoes, the permissible percentage of mechanical damage, and damage from pests and diseases.

The standard indicates the permissible content of toxic elements in ware potatoes and provides requirements for its calibration. Separate sections are devoted to the marking of the commodity label of potatoes, the features of its packaging, and transportation.

Particular attention is paid to the principles of sampling when selling potatoes and methods of monitoring the results.

The National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine, with the active participation of its customers – members of the Ukrainian Association of Potato Producers, developed the national standard for potatoes . It passed a three-year stage of coordination with the largest market players and retail representatives, and the technical committee for standardization also approved it.
