NBU: Capital outflow from card transactions of Ukrainians abroad down by quarter since April, to $600 mln/month

KYIV. Sept 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The outflow of capital from card transactions of Ukrainians abroad has decreased by 25% since April 2023 – to $600 million per month from $800 million per month, said Deputy Head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Serhiy Nikolaychuk.

“Gradually, we see the adaptation of Ukrainian citizens who are increasingly finding work abroad, are increasingly focused on receiving income there and rely less on their hryvnia assets in Ukraine. If we speak in terms of numbers, then approximately in the second half of 2022 – the first quarter of 2023, for transactions with Ukrainian cards abroad, capital outflow was recorded at approximately $800 million per month, but starting in March this volume is already less than $600 million per month,” he said during a press briefing on Thursday.

According to the deputy head of the NBU, such a decrease in spending by Ukrainians abroad since April 2023 was due, among other things, to the measures of the National Bank related to the reduction of the spread between the cash and official exchange rates, which reduced the need or attractiveness of card tourism, as well as measures for financial monitoring and currency supervision.

He added that specific figures on the balance of payments and estimates of expenses for the item “import of travel” would be published on the NBU website on September 18.
