Inspectorate sees no obstacles to extending operation of reactor one of Pivdennoukrainska NPP for another 10 years

KYIV. Sept 19 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate sees no obstacles to the continuation of the operation of reactor one of the Pivdennoukrainska NPP beyond the established period and, if such a decision is made, will extend the operating life of the reactor for another 10 years.

The inspectorate reported this on its Telegram channel on Tuesday with reference to Head of the State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate Oleh Korikov during his trip to the Pivdennoukrainska NPP on September 15.

“Today, we see no obstacles to the continued operation of the nuclear installation of reactor one of the Pivdennoukrainska nuclear power plant at energy power levels. If such a decision is made by the State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate, its service life will be extended by 10 years,” he said.

According to Korikov, as part of the extension of long-term operation at power levels of reactor one of the Pivdennoukrainska nuclear power plant, a comprehensive inspection has already been completed.

“Our specialists checked the status of compliance with the terms of licenses and other permitting documents, checked the status of compliance with the requirements of legislation, norms, rules and standards for nuclear and radiation safety. They also assessed the safety status of the installation, equipment and systems important for safety,” the head of the inspectorate said.

On November 28, 2013, the State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate at its board decided to extend the operation of reactor one of the Pivdennoukrainska NPP for 10 years beyond the design period – until December 2, 2023.

Accordingly, by an inspectorate board resolution dated December 7, 2015, the service life of reactor two of the Pivdennoukrainska NPP was extended by 10 years – until December 31, 2025, and by the resolution dated November 3, 2017 – reactor three of the Pivdennoukrainska NPP – until March 5, 2027.

Reactors one-three of the Pivdennoukrainska NPP were put into operation on October 18, 1983, April 6, 1985 and December 29, 1989, respectively.
