KYIV. Nov 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the Cabinet of Ministers to ensure Ukraine’s readiness to begin negotiations with the European Union on the issue of accession.
Corresponding decree No. 744/2023 on some measures to prepare for the negotiation process on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union was published on the website of the President’s Office.
The document is intended to ensure the implementation of a strategic course towards acquiring full membership of Ukraine in the European Union, creating conditions for effective political interaction and improving coordination of the activities of government bodies with the aim of speedily starting the negotiation process on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
Thus, in accordance with the decree, the head of state instructed the government to initiate consultations with the European Commission to determine the organizational aspects of the negotiation process for Ukraine’s accession to the EU, ensure preparation and submit for consideration to the Verkhovna Rada a bill on approval of a new National Program for Adaptation of Ukrainian Legislation to the Law of the European Union (EU acquis) taking into account the results of the official EU assessment (screening) of the state of implementation of European Union law (EU acquis) into the national legislation of Ukraine.
The Cabinet of Ministers shall also prepare and submit, based on the results of consultations with EU institutions, proposals for the creation of a Ukrainian delegation to participate in negotiations with the European Union on concluding an agreement on Ukraine’s accession to the EU after the relevant decision is made by the European Council.
In addition, the government was instructed by the president to take measures to improve the mechanism for coordinating the activities and interaction of central executive authorities to implement the tasks of preparation and further participation in the negotiation process for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
The government shall ensure that the President of Ukraine is informed on an ongoing basis about the state of preparations for the negotiation process on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
