Borrell: Finalization of 12th sanctions package against Russia being completed

KYIV. Nov 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The European Union is completing work on the 12th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell said, expressing hope for its approval in the near future.

Borrell said at a joint briefing with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba in Brussels that today he expressed to Dmytro Kuleba their firm intention to continue to support Ukraine and help Ukraine repel the aggressor. For this purpose, specifically, the finalization of the 12th package of sanctions is being completed. He presented this to the ministers and hopes that it will be approved soon so that it can be submitted to the Council of Foreign Ministers in December.

Borrell assured that although the EU is monitoring the situation in the Gaza Strip, it does not forget about what is happening in Ukraine.

And, of course, Russia is trying to use the tragedy in Gaza to cause even more destruction and suffering in Ukraine, hoping that the world’s attention will disperse, he said.

At the same time, Borrell stressed that we need to do more and faster.

He said that whenever he talks about Ukraine, he always uses the keywords “more and faster.” Because Putin will most likely use the winter to continue terrorizing Ukraine’s civilian population and attacking its energy infrastructure. Also, two days ago the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor was celebrated, and today Russia continues to use hunger, winter and energy to attack the Ukrainian people.

According to him, during the meeting with Kuleba they focused on three key issues: security obligations for Ukraine, EU membership and the peace formula.

Borrell said they were discussing Ukraine’s path to membership in the European Union, which, after all, is the best guarantee of security that the European Union can offer Ukraine. They were also discussing the next steps in accordance with the recommendation to open negotiations announced by the European Commission.
