Ukrenergo may receive grants from EBRD for repairs of facilities damaged by Russian shelling – adviser to PM

KYIV. Oct 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – NPC Ukrenergo can receive not only credit, but also grant funds from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to eliminate damage to power grids as a result of shelling of energy infrastructure by Russian troops, according to Yuriy Boiko, adviser to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, member of the Supervisory Board of Ukrenergo.

"Now Ukrenergo and the EBRD are working on a new project, under which the company should receive a loan of EUR 300 million. The purpose of a significant part of these funds will be to restore the infrastructure destroyed by the Russians. At the same time, the possibility of additionally providing a certain amount already in the form of a grant is being considered. The details here have not yet been determined, and there is an opportunity for other donors to get involved in this project," Boiko said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

In addition, he added that the World Bank is also considering providing Ukrenergo with financial assistance, the amount of which is still being discussed.

At the same time, according to the adviser to the prime minister, this is only the beginning of real assistance.

"I am convinced that when world leaders see with their own eyes the scale of destruction, they see that these are not fairy tales, that it cannot be quickly restored on their own, and this seriously threatens the normal existence of an entire state within Europe, then assistance to Ukraine will increase significantly," he said.

According to him, destruction inflicted by the Russians on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine will not leave anyone indifferent, because even experts are struck by their cynicism.

He also said that Ukrenergo had recently received a EUR 97 million loan from the EBRD and specified that part of these funds are planned to be used to compensate for dispatcher restrictions to green electricity producers.

"In order to keep the system in balance, there must be not only forced dispatching teams for restrictions that lead to shortfalls in income for green producers, but also fair compensation for such losses, as provided by law," the member of the Ukrenergo Supervisory Board is convinced.
