KYIV. Oct 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) – From October 17 to October 31, 32.87 million trees were planted in Ukraine on an area of 5,680 hectares, reforestation is carried out within the framework of the Green Country presidential program, which involves planting 1 billion trees over three years.
As follows from the data posted on the website of the program, in general, from June 2021 to October 31, 2022, 215.12 million trees were planted in the country on a total area of 37,240 hectares.
Thus, the goals of the program were achieved by 21.5% (3.3 percentage points more over the past two weeks).
According to the Green Country plan, it is planned to increase the number of planted trees to 400 million by spring 2023, to approximately 650 million in spring 2024, and to 1 billion in autumn 2025.
As reported, President Volodymyr Zelensky in June 2021 signed a decree on the implementation of the Green Country project in Ukraine to increase the number of forests in Ukraine. The goal of the project is to expand the area of forests by 1 million hectares in 10 years.
According to Head of the State Agency for Forest Resources Yuriy Bolohovets, planting 1 billion trees is necessary to minimize the effects of global climate change, create protective tree strips to protect against dust storms, and increase the country’s forest cover from the current 15.9% to the minimum required 20%.
