KYIV. Nov 1 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Google and UNESCO handed over 30,000 Chromebooks to Ukraine as part of the continuation of the “Laptop for Every Teacher initiative,” the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine reported on Tuesday.
"In order for teachers to continue to conduct lessons, they need to be provided with computers. That is why, together with the Ministry of Education and Science, we continue the ‘Laptop for every Teacher’ initiative. With the support of Google and UNESCO, new Chromebooks are regularly delivered to educational institutions," Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov wrote on his Telegram channel.
According to the report, approximately 30,000 laptops out of the planned 50,000 have already been delivered to the regions of Ukraine.
"About 5,000 laptops have been delivered to Zhytomyr region and the city of Kyiv. Also, almost 9,000 laptops have been transferred to the regions: to Lviv region – 2,412, Volyn – 1,283, Ternopil – 1,182, Zakarpattia – 1,124, Ivano-Frankivsk – 2,147 and Chernivtsi – 496," the message says.
In addition, 64 more laptops were received by teachers of Luhansk region, currently working and living in Ivano-Frankivsk region.
Earlier, on October 5, Google and UNESCO handed over the first batch of 10,000 laptops as part of the project and increased the planned amount of assistance from 43,000 to 50,000 Chromebooks.
As reported, the project is a continuation of the "Laptop for every Teacher" initiative, and its implementation became possible "thanks to the agreements of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine with Google and with the support of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization UNESCO."
As part of the partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, Google provides UNESCO with EUR 1.2 million to train 50,000 teaching staff to acquire psychosocial skills to support the mental health of their students. This is part of the overall support provided by the company and Google employees in the amount of more than $40 million in cash assistance and $5 million in donations for humanitarian projects.
In addition, 250 universities and colleges have been granted free access to premium features of Google Workspace for Education for six months.
