Ukrzaliznytsia in seven months saves electricity in amount sufficient to power 9,000 apartments every day for six months

KYIV. Nov 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – JSC Ukrzaliznytsia has been operating in an energy efficient mode since April, having saved 17.2 million kWh of electricity.

"Energy efficiency measures were taken in each division of the company, at each enterprise. The result is that since April, electricity savings for operational needs (excluding train traction) amounted to 17.2 million kWh, which is 7.9% less than the standards. This is the volume, which is enough to power more than 9,000 apartments with electricity for half a year," Volodymyr Krot, member of the Ukrzaliznytsia Board, said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

According to him, the company began saving energy in the spring, after the Russian military shelled substations during the fuel crisis in order to increase the use of diesel fuel.

Krot also said that in October, when Ukraine’s power system suffered significant damage, Ukrzaliznytsia also responded to the authorities’ call to reduce power consumption.

"From 8 am to 11 am and from 5 pm to 10 pm, we do our best not to overload the network. Currently, we have minimized the departure of freight trains. Electric trains have special electric heating schedules that are turned off during peak hours and decrease when the train load is less than 50%," he said.

At peak times, the amount of outdoor lighting of stations is also cut at Ukrzaliznytsia, and the use of 10 kW and more power-consuming equipment (compressor units, machine tools, steam generators, etc.) is prohibited.
