KYIV. Nov 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy of the Verkhovna Rada recommended the parliament to regulate the scope of handling genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and improve the system for assessing their risks regarding their possible impact on human health and the environment by adopting relevant bill No. 5839.
The decision to recommend draft law No. 5839 of August 5, 2021 on state regulation of genetic engineering activities and state control over the handling of GMOs and genetically modified products to ensure food security was adopted by the committee at a meeting on November 3, according to the its website.
According to it, the adoption of the document by MPs will allow to comprehensively regulate the sphere of handling GMOs and improve the GMO risk assessment system regarding the possible impact on human health and the environment.
The bill also provides for the introduction of a European mechanism for state registration of GMOs, the improvement of requirements for labeling such products, the introduction of traceability rules, the strengthening of state control in the field of handling GMOs and the establishment of liability for violation of legislation in this area.
The adoption of the draft law will allow achieving system compatibility between legislation of Ukraine and EU in the field of handling GMOs, which is provided for by Ukraine’s obligations under the Association Agreement.
