Kazakhstan, Fortescue Future Industries sign agreement on green hydrogen production projects

ALMATY. Nov 9 (Interfax) – The Kazakh government and the company Fortescue Future Industries have signed a framework agreement on the implementation of green hydrogen production projects in the country, including Atyrau and Mangistau regions, the government press office said in a statement.

Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov and Andrew Forrest, the head of Fortescue, at the Climate Implementation Summit, signed the agreement during the UN Climate Change Conference in Egypt.

The agreement will make a significant contribution to achieving Kazakhstan’s goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 15% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, according to the statement.

Future projects are designed to produce a significant amount of green hydrogen, which is also to be supplied to the European market under a memorandum of understanding between Kazakhstan and the EU, the statement says.

It is noted that the introduction of clean hydrogen production affordable technologies could allow Kazakhstan to become one of the world’s largest suppliers of this fuel in 5-7 years.

Fortescue Future Industries specializes in the production of green carbon-free hydrogen from 100% renewable sources.
