Book value of Metinvest's property destroyed by Russian war amounts to UAH 96.5 bln – lawyer

KYIV. Nov 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The book value of the property of Metinvest Mining and Metallurgical Group, owned by Rinat Akhmetov and Vadym Novinsky, destroyed as a result of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is currently UAH 96.5 billion.

"The caused damage at the residual balance sheet value is UAH 96.5 billion. This is without lost profit. This is according to documents that were and documented as destroyed. And there is also stolen property, etc., and we need to sort it out," Svitlana Romanova, director for legal support at Metinvest Group, said at the Kyiv International Economic Forum on Thursday.

At the same time, she noted that the war caused a lot of damage to everyone. As for Metinvest, the main destroyed or damaged enterprises are located in Mariupol, among which are Azovstal, Illich Iron and Steel Works. In total, 21 enterprises suffered significant damage, including Avdiyivka Coke and Chemical Plant, the largest coking plant in Europe.

Romanova stated that in case of damage, it is necessary to document it. As of October 1, Metinvest fully documented the damage caused to the company’s Mariupol enterprises.

"Some 300 people worked on documentation, 1,500 acts were drawn up – 124,000 pages! Almost 4,000 photos and videos. And drones do not always help, you need to have photo and video materials with tags – with date, time. It is also important to collect information from all sources," the top manager said.

She clarified that documentation had been drawn up on 6,000 real estate objects and 380 movable property objects, on the basis of this, 19 applications had been submitted to the European Court of Human Rights, and 60 criminal cases had been initiated on facts of damage as a result of the war.

"And there is no methodology for assessing damage to the property of an integral property complex. There is a completely different assessment methodology," the expert said.

At the same time, she noted that quick compensation for damages and court decisions should not be expected – this is a long process.

"There will be no quick answer – we need to work," Romanova summed up.
