Estonia, Russia agree on catching fish in border waters

TALLINN. Nov 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) – An agreement on catching fish in the waters bordering Estonia and Russia was reached during Estonian-Russian intergovernmental negotiations on fisheries this week, the press service for the Estonian Environment Ministry said on Friday.

"The agreements are based on an assessment of the fish resources of the border lakes by scientists from both countries," the statement said.

According to scientists’ assessment, the volumes of commercial fish in the region have been minor in recent years, but have improved slightly compared to last year.

Thus, thanks to the agreements, fishermen will catch more pike, perch and bream, but less vendace in the Chudskoye (Peipsi), Teploe and Pskov Lakes next year (as compared with the current year).

The 48th meeting of the Intergovernmental Fisheries Commission took place from November 14 to 16 in the online format and was organized by Estonia.

The Estonian party informed Russia in advance that it was not possible to hold the meeting in Estonia due to the events in Ukraine.

Additionally, the level of representation of the Estonian delegation at this year’s Estonian-Russian talks was lowered from the vice-chancellor of the Ministry of Environment to the head of the fisheries department of the ministry. The conservation about the fish resources in the Chudskoye Lake, the Teploe Lake and the Pskov Lake was the only issue discussed at the negotiations.
