Moldova has no intentions to leave CIS presently – PM

CHISINAU. Nov 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita has said that the country’s withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is not under discussion at this time, as Moldova has joined those CIS projects which are beneficial to its citizens and the country.

"Moldova has no plans to leave the CIS so as not to aggravate the situation and to preserve peace and stability in the country. I do not think that now is the time to make hasty decisions, which could lead to a certain escalation," Gavrilita said on the ProTV-Chisinau television channel in response to a question as to whether Moldova is planning to withdraw from the Commonwealth.

"The main thing is to preserve peace and stability and achieve the best results for our citizens in these difficult circumstances," she said.

Moldova has joined those CIS projects which are beneficial to the country and its citizens, she said. In particular, this concerns cooperation in the field of economy and trade. Since the very foundation of the CIS, Moldova has not been involved in discussions of political and security issues.

As reported, Moldova did not take part in the events within the CIS this year, including the recent summit.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has previously said that withdrawal from the CIS was not under discussion.

In mid-May, Moldovan Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said that the decision on the expediency of Moldova’s participation in the CIS would be made at the conclusion of the current situation in Ukraine. "This issue is not being discussed now" and participation "in CIS events is almost impossible due to the situation in the region," he said in response to journalists’ queries about this.
