Kyivstar launches VoLTE for prepaid subscribers

KYIV. Nov 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Kyivstar mobile network operator has begun gradually connecting prepaid subscribers to the Voice-over-LTE service for calls via 4G, the company said on Tuesday.

"The operator plans to carry out automatic activation of the service. Since 2021, the technology has become available for about 300,000 (contract) subscribers. VoLTE now works in the Kyivstar network for more than 100 smartphone models from manufacturers such as Apple, Samsung, Huawei and XIAOMI," the press service of Kyivstar said.

According to its data, since the beginning of this year as of October, the number of users of the latest technology has grown to 500,000, but the company predicts that in the first quarter of 2023 it will exceed 2 million.

Kyivstar said that VoLTE improves the quality of sound transmission and allows subscribers to use high-speed mobile Internet during a call: one can simultaneously talk and use applications on smartphone, as well as search for the necessary information on the Internet without additional debits and traffic fees.

The company said that if the subscriber meets the necessary requirements for working with VoLTE, then he or she needs to wait for an SMS confirmation from the operator about the successful activation of this service.

Kyivstar is the largest Ukrainian telecommunications operator. It provides communication and data transmission services based on a wide range of mobile and fixed-line technologies, including 3G. By the end of 2021, about 26.2 million mobile subscribers and about 1.2 million fixed-line Internet customers used its services.

Kyivstar’s shareholder is the international group VEON (formerly VimpelCom Ltd.). The group’s shares are listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange (New York).
