Power shortage in energy system reduced to 50% by 19:00, impossible to name exact time of full recovery – Ukrenergo

KYIV. Nov 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – By the evening of November 24, power shortage in the energy system had decreased to 50%, all nuclear power plants began to gain capacity, but it is still impossible to predict the timing of a full recovery, Ukrenergo said.

"As of 19:00, electricity producers have provided about 50% of the country’s consumption needs. A significant part of thermal power plants and hydroelectric power plants are already operating, all nuclear power plants are gradually gaining capacity, with the exception of the occupied Zaporizhia nuclear power plant," Ukrenergo said.

The company explained the shortage of power by the fact that nuclear power plants, which provide half of the country’s electricity production, after a forced shutdown, return to operating mode slowly, which is a technological necessity.

At the same time, they specified that the energy network was prepared for inclusion in the operation of power plants.

Ukrenergo stressed that after the Russian missile attack on November 23, a systemic accident occurred in the energy system.

"Important energy facilities have been hit. Automation has worked. After such accidents, recovery takes longer than in the case when dispatchers make shutdowns," it stressed, pointing out that "it is impossible now to name the exact timing of full recovery."

The company clarified that, first of all, power is supplied to critical infrastructure facilities: gas distribution networks, water utilities, treatment facilities, hospitals, and then there is a gradual connection of household consumers

"In order to maintain the interconnected energy system, despite the Russian terrorist attacks, controlled shutdowns are necessary," the company explained.
