Qatar to provide $20 mln for Grain from Ukraine initiative

KYIV. Nov 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The State of Qatar will provide $20 million to purchase foodstuffs for African countries through the Grain from Ukraine initiative, announced by President Volodymyr Zelensky at the G20 summit last week, to help feed people around the world.

This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, during his speech at the International Summit on Food Security on Saturday.

"Qatar welcomes special programs and projects that contribute to strengthening food security and increasing the resilience of countries. We welcome Ukraine’s Grain from Ukraine initiative, as it aims to help African countries in obtaining Ukrainian food exports. Qatar will provide $20 million to support this initiative," the representative of Qatar said.

He also recalled that the Qatar Fund for Development will provide $12 million to countries in the Horn of Africa to ensure food security, and has already provided the UN World Food Programme (WFP) with $90 million to provide food to the hungry people in Yemen.

In addition, Qatar has already allocated $5 million to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine for the purchase of ambulance vehicles and other medical equipment.

"Qatar remains a reliable international partner, and we support collective initiatives, international events aimed at ensuring that our country works effectively together with international partners to counter the challenges that threaten specific communities, and also pose a collective threat to humanity," Al-Thani said.
