IAEA to provide assistance to Chornobyl NPP, Central Enterprise for Management of Radioactive Waste

KYIV. Nov 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will provide assistance to the SOE Chornobyl NPP and the SOE Central Enterprise for the Management of Radioactive Waste in updating technical equipment.

As the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine reported on Tuesday, representatives of the IAEA, for this purpose, studied the existing state of the facilities of the two enterprises during the agency’s mission to the Chornobyl NPP and the Central Enterprise on November 22 through November 24, 2022.

"Based on the results of the mission, the IAEA representatives studied the state of the enterprises’ facilities in order to provide the necessary assistance, namely, updating the technical equipment of the Chornobyl NPP and SOE Central Enterprise for the Management of Radioactive Waste," the inspectorate said on its website on Tuesday.

During the mission, the IAEA representatives also visited the Pidlisny and Buriakivka radioactive waste disposal sites, the Vector production complex of the SOE Central Enterprise for the Management of Radioactive Waste and the ChNPP laboratories.

The IAEA representatives were on a mission in the Chornobyl exclusion zone at the time when Russian troops launched another missile attack on the energy infrastructure of Ukraine on November 23, 2022, the inspectorate said.

"Consequently, the IAEA inspectors became direct witnesses of the de-energization of the ChNPP industrial site and the transfer of facilities to the emergency power supply system from diesel generators," the inspectorate said.
