Grossi hopes to agree with Ukraine, Russia on creation of security zone around Zaporizhia NPP by end of 2022

BRUSSELS. Dec 2 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The IAEA expects to reach an agreement with Ukraine and Russia on the creation of a security zone around Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) by the end of 2022, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said on Friday.

"My commitment is to reach a solution as soon as possible. I hope by the end of the year," Western media quoted Grossi said.

According to him, the task of the IAEA is to avoid an incident at this nuclear facility, and not "to create situation" that would favour either one party or the other.

At the end of November, Grossi said the agency had made progress in negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian sides on the creation of a nuclear safety zone around ZNPP.

As reported, the IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution in November urging Russia to withdraw its military from the ZNPP and cease all activities at Ukrainian nuclear facilities.
