Spending by Ukrainians abroad triples in 2022 – NBU head

KYIV. Dec 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Spending by Ukrainians abroad in 2022 reached $2 billion a month, three times more than in the previous year, said the head of the National Bank, Andriy Pyshny, with reference to the NBU study of the economic consequences for Europe of one of the largest migration waves, which will soon be published.

"Ukrainian migrants support the economies of European countries – we made such an unobvious conclusion for many thanks to a study by specialists from our analytical division," the head of the Ukrainian central bank said on Facebook.

According to him, as a result of spending and employment of Ukrainian citizens abroad, the European economy receives a positive fiscal effect and a positive impact in the long term.

The head of the NBU pointed out that the expenses of Ukrainians abroad are provided by accumulated savings in Ukrainian banks, labor income in Ukraine and their countries of residence, as well as social assistance received.

He clarified that according to the calculations of the NBU specialists based on IMF research and various surveys, thanks to the contribution of Ukrainian migrants, GDP, for example, in Estonia, Poland and the Czech Republic in 2026 will be 2.2-2.3% more than in the scenario without migration.

"Since the start of the full-scale war, Ukrainians in Poland have paid 10 billion zlotys (about $2.4 billion) in taxes, which significantly exceeds the amount of assistance provided," Pyshny said.

The banker considers unfounded the fears and negative forecasts of the impact of the multimillion flow of migrants from Ukraine, since they did not take into account the factor of the active position of the Ukrainian people.

"Our citizens take the initiative into their own hands, quickly integrate into society, find work, pay taxes to their host countries and spend the money they earn," Pyshny said.
