Forest Resources Agency soon to open four forest seed plants, five more in 2023 – head

KYIV. Dec 14 (Interfax-Ukraine) – In 2022, the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine opened a seed-breeding complex in Zhytomyr region and expanded the line for the production of seedlings with a closed root system at a plant in Khmelnytsky region, four more similar complexes will soon start operating in Kirovohrad, Volyn, Ivano-Frankivsk and Zakarpattia regions.

As reported on the Facebook page of the head of the agency, Yuriy Bolokhovets, on Wednesday, next year it is planned to open forest seed plants in Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions, as well as expand the already functioning complex in Ternopil region.

He also said that the cultivation of tree seedlings with a closed root system at forest seed complexes shows its effectiveness due to their good survival rate, they develop faster, and for forestry enterprises, the time for planting them is significantly increased.

"During the war, foresters continue implementing the president’s program Green Country. Since the beginning of the program, 240 million trees have been planted. The forest is being restored on the territory of sites of fire and clear-cut sites. New forests are also being created: almost 2,000 hectares per year," Bolokhovets said.

According to him, the latest information on Ukrainian forests dates back to 2010 and does not take into account all areas covered with forest vegetation. Last year, the State Forest Resources Agency initiated work on deciphering satellite images to create an up-to-date map of Ukrainian forests. To date, "masks" of forests have been generated for almost the entire territory of the country, with the exception of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia regions and Crimea.
