Energoatom intends to buy uranium hexafluoride from Canadian Cameco

KYIV. Dec 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Energoatom President Petro Kotin and Cameco President and CEO Tim Gitzel discussed the possibility of purchasing uranium hexafluoride from the Canadian company for the production of nuclear fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants during an online meeting on Wednesday.

"They [Kotin and Gitzel] discussed the possibility of supplying uranium hexafluoride, which will ensure the production of nuclear fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Also at the meeting, they discussed the importance of long-term cooperation – until 2035 – between Energoatom and Cameco," Energoatom said in its Telegram channel.

As the company said, such interaction will ensure the safety of nuclear fuel supplies to Ukrainian nuclear power plants. In addition, cooperation between companies is also important in the context of increasing the efficiency of uranium production at the domestic Skhidny Mining.

In September 2019, Energoatom and Cameco signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the nuclear energy sector. Its goal was to develop cooperation in the production and supply of nuclear materials and nuclear fuel.

Cameco is one of the world’s largest suppliers of uranium concentrate. At the end of 2021, the company’s uranium production amounted to 9% of its global production.

As reported, on December 19 Kotin and Urenco CEO Boris Schucht discussed the issue of increasing the supply of enriched uranium to Westinghouse for the production of nuclear fuel for Ukrainian nuclear power plants during 2024-2025.

Energoatom is pursuing a policy of diversifying supplies at different stages of the nuclear fuel cycle for the production of nuclear fuel.
