Kazakhstan set to raise $874 mln for sewage treatment facilities

ALMATY. Dec 27 (Interfax) – Kazakhstan’s government expects to secure nearly 403 billion tenge or $874 million at the current rate from international financial institutions for the construction and modernization of sewage treatment facilities, Industry and Infrastructure Minister Kairbek Uskenbayev said.

The minister said 68 towns and cities needed to build or upgrade sewage treatment facilities, that 27 of 89 towns and cities had no such facilities, while the facilities in 41 had a depreciation rate of 60%.

"Borrowing funds from international financial organizations backed by government guarantee will help build and upgrade sewage treatment systems in 26 cities," Uskenbayev said at the government meeting on Tuesday.

Nearly 403 billion tenge of loans will be provided for 15 years.

Three projects have already been put in motion in Saryagash, Atyrau and Fort-Shevchenko. Next year, funds will be available for another three projects in Aktau, Lenger, and Shymkent.
