Warming in Ukraine to allow completing corn harvesting – GrainTrade

KYIV. Dec 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – In Ukraine, a warm cyclone next week will raise the temperature by 5-6 degrees Celsius above the norm, which will make it possible to complete the harvesting of the remaining quarter of the planned area of corn.

As reported on the website of the GrainTrade electronic grain exchange on Thursday, the harvesting of this crop will be facilitated by the absence of snow on Ukrainian fields.

At the same time, a similar warming observed in the European part of the Russian Federation will not allow them to harvest 10-15% of the corn remaining in the fields due to a 5-20 cm snow layer on the fields.

The state of winter crops in Ukraine is characterized as normal, with a slight shortage of moisture in the soil in the south.

"Climate change has become a reality of the present. According to the report of the World Meteorological Organization, the last eight years may become the warmest on record. Thus, the average global temperature in 2022 was 1.15 degrees Celsius higher than the average of 1850-1900, which manifested itself in the rapid melting of glaciers," GrainTrade said in the statement.

According to GrainTrade, heavy rainfall is recorded in the United States, Brazil and Argentina, which will contribute to the development of crops. At the same time, anomalous heat waves have been recorded in India since the beginning of the year: the number of days of intense heat in 2022 reached 203, while in 2019 there were 179, which negatively affected winter wheat crops and reduced its yield.
