Romanian President calls on Zelensky to promote revision of law on national minorities

KYIV. Jan 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, in a phone conversation with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, called for a revision of the law on national minorities adopted in December, some provisions of which have drawn criticism from the Romanian side.

"Conveyed to President Zelensky Romania’s concerns on the recently adopted Law on minorities and agreed to intensify the dialogue for finding solutions to ensure the highest standards of protection for the Romanian community in Ukraine, similar to the Ukrainian community in Romania," Iohannis said on Twitter.

According to the press service of the Romanian presidential administration, the presidents agreed that in the near future the foreign ministers of the two countries will hold discussions on the bilateral solution of existing issues.

As reported, Zelensky signed bill No. 8224 on December 29, 2022. The document fixes the definition of "national minorities (communities);" rights, freedoms and obligations of persons belonging to national minorities, features of state policy for the implementation of the rights and freedoms of representatives of national minorities, powers of the central executive agency implementing state policy in the field of protecting the rights and freedoms of persons belonging to national minorities.
