Ukraine implements backup power supply project for large cities in case of blackout – expert

KYIV. Jan 10 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine is implementing a project to provide cities with electricity in case of serious damage to generation and networks by Russian terrorists, Director of the Energy Research Center Oleksandr Kharchenko has said.

"This project is now being implemented jointly by the government, the city administration, donors and is aimed at first securing Kyiv, and then other large cities, from possible blackouts, securing their critical infrastructure, primarily heating, water supply, from power outages. This work is being actively carried out," he said during a briefing at the Media Center in Kyiv on Tuesday.

"We are talking about technological energy solutions, how to add generation reserves for large cities, so that even in a situation where Moscow terrorists manage to destroy a certain part of the high-voltage grid, it would be possible to deliver electricity to these cities," Kharchenko said.

He said official announcements on this issue may soon appear.

The Energy Research Center’s director said a system of redundancy within cities can and should be created, since previous attacks have already shown how problematic is the loss of power supply, which, in particular, Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa and other cities faced.

As for the current situation, according to him, the average daily shortage of electricity is from 20 to 30%, and despite the fact that the energy system is replenished daily with new capacity, albeit small, consumption is also growing against the backdrop of cold weather. However, Ukraine, as the expert noted, has already reached quite predictable outage schedules.

Kharchenko said now the efforts of all those involved are focused on preparing for a new attack by Russian invaders so that its consequences for the energy system are minimal.
