Moldova reduces gas consumption 42% yoy to 102 mcm in Dec

CHISINAU. Jan 11 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Moldova consumed 101.8 million cubic meters of gas in December 2022, down 42.2% year-on-year, Moldovagaz CEO Vadim Ceban said on Telegram.

Consumption rose 61.3% by 38.7 mcm compared to November 2022, Ceban said.

Gazprom cut daily volumes of gas supplies to Moldova 30% to 5.7 mcm on October 1, while the country needs 8.06 mcm. Gazprom said the reduction is due to technical problems related to limited gas transit through Ukraine. Gazprom confirmed that it would also supply Moldova with 5.7 mcm of gas per day in December, 43.5% of what is necessary during the cold period.

Moldova used gas from Gazprom only the first three days of December. Moldova began supplying all incoming gas to Transdniestria on December 4 in return for covering over 50% of the country’s electricity needs. Moldova itself is using gas from reserves created earlier in Romania and Ukraine, as well as making exchange purchases.
