Azerbaijan could boost gas production by 10 bcm over 5-6 years – Aliyev

BAKU. Jan 11 (Interfax) – Azerbaijan is planning to boost production of gas by 10 billion cubic meters over the course of five to six years, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

"Increasing the capacity of the TANAP [Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline] pipeline twofold is connected to Azerbaijani gas. In this regard, we, if everything goes according to plan, will be able to additionally produce a minimum of 10 bcm of gas in the next five to six years," Aliyev said in an interview with local television.

Growth in exports of Azerbaijani gas is expected on the whole in light of new fields being put into operation, he said.

"Our exports of natural gas will be greater, because we’re going to export gas from new fields, Absheron, Umid-Babek, Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli, Shah Deniz, and at the same time, the gas saved [which is currently being sent to power stations to produce electricity]," Aliyev said.

The Azerbaijani government expects to produce 46.762 bcm of gas in the country in 2023.

Azerbaijani gas production rose 7.1% in January-November 2022 to 42.498 bcm, while production of commercial gas totaled 31.791 bcm, up 8%.

Azerbaijan produced 43.864 bcm of gas in 2021, up 18.1%.
