BAKU. May 4 (Interfax) – In January-February of 2023, Azerbaijan exported 1.698 bcm of gas to Turkey from the Shah Deniz field, which is 10% higher than the same period last year, according to the Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority.
In February 2023, the export of Azerbaijani gas to Turkey totaled 815.73 mcm, an increase of 9.1% compared to February 2022. Azerbaijan’s share in February of this year was 13.6% of all gas supplied to Turkey. This gave Azerbaijan third place in terms of share. In first place was Russia, which was 34.4% of all deliveries, and in second place was the United States with 17%. Algeria was fourth with an 11.2% share.
In February, total gas exports to Turkey reached 6.12 bcm, a decrease of 4.2% compared to February 2022. Meanwhile, pipeline gas totaled 3.147 bcm, which was 52.4% of all deliveries, a decline of 12.9%, and LNG reached 2.864 bcm, 47.7% of all supplies, and an increase of 7.8%.
In total, deliveries to Turkey in February came from 12 countries.
Turkey receives Azerbaijani gas produced at Shah-Deniz from areas developed under both Stage-1 and Stage-2.
As previously reported, in the third quarter of 2021, Azerbaijan and Turkey signed a new agreement on the sale and purchase of gas from Stage-1 for 11 bcm of natural gas delivered via the Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum pipeline. The agreement provides for the supply by the end of 2024 (Q4 2021 through year-end 2024) of 3.5 bcm of gas per year. Deliveries under the agreement began on October 1, 2021.
In 2022, Azerbaijan exported 8.71 bcm of gas to Turkey from the Shah Deniz field, a decrease of 1.3% from 2021.
Azerbaijan plans to export 10.2 bcm of gas to Turkey in 2023.
The contract for the development of the Shah Deniz field was signed in 1996. Equity partners in the contract include: BP, as operator, with 29.99%; the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan with 21.02%; LUKOIL with 19.99%, NICO with 10%, and TPAO with 19%.
