Azerbaijan intends to create minimum of 6 GW of additional renewable generation capacity by 2037

BAKU. Dec 19 (Interfax) – Azerbaijan plans to create additional generating capacities on the basis of renewable energy sources of no less than 6 gigawatts by 2037, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said.

"We plan to produce up to 3 GW of wind power and 1 GW of solar energy along with a strategic investor by 2027, and 80% of these capacities will be directed toward export. We plan to create a minimum of up to 6 GW of additional capacities by 2037," Aliyev said in Bucharest at a plenary session related to the ceremony for the signing of a strategic partnership agreement in the sphere of development and supplies of green energy between the governments of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary.

A transcript of Aliyev’s speech has been published on the Azerbaijani presidential website.

Construction of another energy bridge between Azerbaijan and Europe is beginning in Bucharest, Aliyev said.

"Our country is preparing to become an important supplier of electricity to Europe, mainly green energy," Aliyev said, noting that the potential of the renewable energy sector in Azerbaijan exceeds 27 GW of wind and solar energy on land and 157 GW of wind energy in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

No less than 3 GW of additional transmission capacity should be created for the first stage of Azerbaijani electricity exports, he said.

"The Azerbaijani Energy Ministry has signed a framework agreement with another global energy company. This company plans to invest in the creation of capacities for production of up to 12 GW of wind and solar power in Azerbaijan. Thus, no less than 3 GW of additional transmission capacities should be created for the first phase of Azerbaijani exports," Aliyev said.
