Azerbaijan reduces gas supplies to Turkey 4% in Jan-Sept

BAKU. Dec 5 (Interfax) – Azerbaijan exported 6.41 billion cubic meters of gas to Turkey from the Shah Deniz field in January-September 2022, down 4.4% year-on-year, according to Turkey’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority.

Export supplies to Turkey totaled 3.401 bcm on the whole in September 2022, down 20.56% year-on-year, including pipeline gas, which accounted for 91.28% of all supplies at 3.105 bcm, down 14.43%, and liquefied natural gas for 8.72% at 296.51 million cubic meters, down 54.59%. Azerbaijan accounted for 20.89% of overall supplies at 710.48 mcm, down 3.73%.

Azerbaijan remained the third largest country by volume of gas supplies to Turkey in September.

Azerbaijan exported 8.82 bcm of gas to Turkey from the Shah Deniz field in 2021, down 22.7% from 2020.

Supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Turkey were carried out based on contracts within the framework of Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the development of the Shah Deniz field until April 16, 2021. The agreement with Turkey’s BOTAS Petroleum Pipeline Corporation for the purchase and sale of gas within the framework of Stage 1 expired after April 16, and supplies were only carried out under the contract within the framework of Stage 2. The parties concluded a new contract in the third quarter of last year envisioning supplies until 2025. Supplies under the agreement began on October 1, 2021. Supplies under the new contract envision 2.55 bcm in 2022. The peak volume of supplies under the contract has been set at 3.7 bcm per year.

The contract for the field’s development was signed in Baku on June 4, 1996 and ratified by the Milli Majlis, Azerbaijan’s parliament, on October 17, 1996. BP is the project operator with a 29.99% stake, State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic holds 21.02%, Lukoil has 19.99%, TPAO 19%, and Nico 10%.
