Consumer confidence of Ukrainians falls to 85.6 p.p. in April – survey

KYIV. May 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) of Ukrainians improved by 6.8 points in April to 85.6 points on a 200-point scale, according to a survey by the Info Sapiens agency.

"After the jump in March, the Index of Economic Expectations fell slightly but still remains abnormally high: Ukrainians begin to expect less positive changes during the year but remain optimistic for five years. At the same time, the Index of Current Situation has continued its downward trend since the beginning of the war; the last time so low it was in early 2016," the agency said, commenting on the situation.

Thus, the overall Consumer Sentiment Index decreased slightly, although it remains relatively high, Info Sapiens analysts said.

According to the study, growth was shown only by Index of Propensity to Consume: it increased by 1.4 p. to the level 30.

At the same time, Index of Current Personal Financial Standing equals 56.9, which is 14.3 points lower than the indicator in March.

In April, Index of Economic Expectations (ІЕE) have increased and equals 113.7, which is 1.7 p. lower that the level of this indicator in March. Index of Expected Changes in Personal Financial Standing equals 81.7, which is 5.4 points lower than in March.

In addition, Index of Expectations of the Country’s Economic Development Over the Next Year in April equals 102.7, which is 13.4 points lower than in previous month and Index of Expectations of the Country’s Economic Development over the Next 5 Years decreased by 2.4 points compared to last month and equals 156.7 p.

The Info Sapiens said that in April, the indicator of Index of Expectations of Changes in Unemployment has increased by 0.4 points and equals 134.8. Index of Inflationary Expectations increased by 0.9 point and equals 170.5 p.

At the same time, Expectations of Ukrainians regarding the hryvna’s exchange rate in the coming three months have improved: Index of Devaluation Expectations increased by 1.9 p. and equals 138.6.

The study of consumer confidence is carried out by a random survey of domestic households. The poll involves 1,000 people aged 16 and over. A representative sample is selected by gender and age, also by type and size of settlement. The margin of error is 3.1%. The survey has been conducted since June 2000: earlier it was conducted by GfK Ukraine, and since 2019 by Info Sapiens. This survey wave was conducted from April 10 to April 14, 2022.
