KYIV. Nov 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Consumption of milk and dairy products by Ukrainians, taking into account self-sufficiency of the population and consumption of industrial goods, in 2023 will be 7% higher than the previous year and amount to 6.5 million tonnes, the output of industrial dairy products will increase by 14% and amount to 2.9 million tonnes, the information and analytical agency Infagro has reported.
“After last year’s significant drop in the demand of the domestic market, caused by Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in 2023 there is already confidence in the positive dynamics of consumption of milk and dairy products,” Infagro said.
According to the analysts, the reasons for the decrease in domestic demand for milk and dairy products in 2022 were migration, occupation of territories and the economic consequences of the war.
“Thanks to the achievements of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, we have the de-occupation of a number of territories, the confidence and determination of business to develop the economy, several waves of return migration of citizens to Ukraine. Consumer confidence for dairy products also reflects these phenomena,” the experts said.
They stated that the August-September wave of return of Ukrainians gave a serious impetus to the growth of the domestic market for dairy products. Together with the seasonal decrease in the supply of raw materials and the relatively low share of imports in the summer, this resulted in a current shortage in the raw materials market and, accordingly, a significant increase in purchase prices for raw milk, which continues today.
