KYIV. Jan 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Continental Farmers Group agricultural holding took part in the voluntary carbon program AgreenaCarbon and, based on the results of the 2022 harvest, received certified confirmation of its regenerative production practices, the press service of the agricultural holding reported.
“The company is among the pioneers in the direction of introducing the carbon market in Ukraine. This became possible thanks to the transition from classical farming to methods that can significantly reduce carbon emissions into the atmosphere: mini-till, the use of organic fertilizers, green manure, etc. As well as the use of ERP-systems, that is, complete transparency and reliability of credentials,” the agricultural holding wrote on Facebook.
According to certificates received under the program, Continental cultivates at least 153,000 hectares of area (80% of the land bank) using technologies that meet internationally approved principles for reducing carbon emissions. The amount of carbon dioxide retained in the soil is equivalent to the amount of carbon certificates received and is about 1.48 tonnes per hectare.
“We have been actively introducing precision farming for several years now, refusing deep cultivation, taking care of restoring the fertility of our soils, and now we have been able to receive confirmation of these practices at the international level. Our goal is not only to increase productivity, but also to participate in overcoming global climate change, since agriculture has traditionally been and remains one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Georg von Nolcken, CEO of Continental Farmers Group.
At the same time, it is clarified that the implementation of carbon certificates allows farmers to partially compensate for the costs incurred on the transition to regenerative agriculture and reducing the carbon footprint, Continental recalled.
They added that for them, participation in carbon programs is proof of compliance with environmental standards and a high level of corporate social responsibility.
