Dec 20 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The ports of the Danube region (Izmail, Reni, Ust-Dunaisk) handled 14.5 million tonnes of cargo in January-November 2022, which is 2.9 times higher than in the same period last year, the main increase in transshipment was provided by an increase in exports of agro-industrial products, which increased by 42 times – up to 6.1 million tonnes.
According to the Facebook page of the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority (USPA), the port of Izmail handled 7.7 million tonnes of cargo in January-November 2022 (an increase of 2.1 times compared to January-November 2021), Reni – 6.1 million tonnes (growth by 5 times), Ust-Dunaisk – 662,000 tonnes (growth by 13 times).
"Since the beginning of the year, the export of agricultural products (cereals, vegetable oil) in the Ukrainian Danube ports is about 24% of the total volume of seaports of Ukraine. Despite the fact that today the ports of Izmail, Reni, Ust-Dunaisk have used almost all capacities for transshipment of goods, there is still potential for further development, namely modernization and renovation of port infrastructure, attraction of investments for the construction of new terminals, dredging, etc.," the USPA quotes its head Oleksiy Vostrikov.
The state enterprise recalled that most transport and forwarding companies reoriented logistics to the ports of the Danube region after Russian aggression in Ukraine and the blockade of Ukraine’s Azov and Black Sea ports. Today, most of the fleet is sent to Ukrainian ports on the Danube and in the opposite direction using the Ukrainian Danube-Black Sea shipping lane.
