KYIV. Nov 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The state enterprise Energoatom plans to build a plant in Ukraine for the production of basic equipment for small modular reactors (SMR) using Holtec SMR technology, including the reactor vessel.
Energoatom reported on Telegram this was stated by president of the company Petro Kotin during a joint meeting with Vice President of the American Holtec International Riaz Awan.
“The introduction of the latest technologies and the construction of modern Holtec production facilities in Ukraine will be of enormous importance for the post-war economic recovery of our country. This will create thousands of new jobs and significantly enhance the competitiveness of the Ukrainian nuclear industry. There is a chance to become leaders in this area along with other global companies,” emphasized Kotin.
According to him, this plant should not only ensure the construction of about 3,000 MW of SMR capacity in Ukraine, but also become a hub for the export of this technology to other European countries.
In April 2023, Energoatom and Holtec signed an agreement to build a plant for the production of components for SMRs. The document declared a plan to install up to 20 SMR reactors in Ukraine.
As reported, Energoatom and Holtec International also plan to build a plant in Ukraine for the production of containers for storing spent nuclear fuel.
