Gas transit through Ukraine's GTS in 2022 to halve, not to exceed 21 bcm – ex-head of GTSOU

KYIV. Nov 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The transit of Russian gas through the Ukraine’s gas transmission system (GTS) in 2022 will not exceed 21 billion cubic meters with a capacity of 40 billion cubic meters by reserved Gazprom, the ex-head of Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU) Serhiy Makogon has said on his Facebook page.

According to the operational data of the GTSOU, in the period from January 1 to November 7, 2022, the transit of Russian gas through the GTS of Ukraine amounted to about 18.2 million cubic meters. According to the calculations of Interfax-Ukraine, if Gazprom continues supplying the well-established 42.4 million cubic meters of gas per day for transit to Europe and Moldova, then for the remaining days of November and December it will amount to 2.3 billion cubic meters.

Thus, in total, by 2022, we should expect the transit of Russian gas through the GTS of Ukraine in the amount of about 20.5 billion cubic meters, which is half as much as in 2021 (41.6 billion cubic meters).

Makogon said that after Gazprom stopped Nord Stream-1 and the Russian Federation imposed sanctions on the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline through Poland, transit through Ukraine became the main route for gas supplies from Russia to the EU.

"Our GTS continues supplying gas to the homes of not only Ukrainian, but also European consumers," the ex-head of the Ukrainian operator said.

"I am sure that the last cubic meter of gas from Russia to the EU will pass through our GTS, and Nord Stream pipelines will never be restored. Russia is irretrievably losing the European market," Makogon said.
