TBILISI. May 10 (Interfax) – Georgia imported 41,000 tonnes of wheat in Q1 2023, 22.3% more than the same period last year, according to data from Gruzstat.
Flour imports increased 35% to 43,000 tonnes.
According to the Gruzstat, over 95% of the total imports of wheat and flour this year, as in previous years, originated from Russia. The remainder came from Ukraine, Kazakhstan and some other countries.
Georgia annually consumes about 650,000 tonnes of wheat, and meets nearly 20% of demand via domestic production. The Georgian government has set the task in the coming years of raising the country’s self-sufficiency for wheat up to 50%.
