Kamet Steel upgrading one nitrogen compressor to reduce power consumption in conditions of power shortage due to shelling

KYIV. Jan 5 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Kamet Steel plant of the Metinvest mining and metallurgical group, created at the facilities of the Dniprovsky Metallurgical Plant (Kamianske, Dnipropetrovsk region), is carrying out a major overhaul of a compressor that prepares and compresses nitrogen gas in the oxygen compressor shop (OCC).

According to the company’s press release on Wednesday, the main goal of the overhaul is to improve the reliability, safety of operation, non-failure operation and efficiency of the unit, which provides steelmaking and blast-furnace production with compressed nitrogen.

At the same time, the preparation and compression of nitrogen in the oxygen-compressor shop is carried out by three compressors, now under major repairs – CPC No. 6. Repairmen must completely disassemble the unit, revise the main equipment and, if necessary, replace worn parts and assemblies.

"The lubrication system will also be repaired and the compressor electric motor will be replaced. This will reduce power consumption by 10 kWh, which is especially important during the period of power shortage due to heavy shelling. And thanks to the repair of shut-off valves and the flow path of the compressor, OCC power engineers plan to increase productivity unit to the level of passport data, namely, to reach 12.5 thousand cubic meters of compressed nitrogen per hour," the company said.

As reported, Metinvest’s Kamet Steel resumed steel production at the end of December 2022 after the suspension of work at the end of November due to electricity restrictions due to shelling of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure by Russian invaders.
