KIIS: 80% of Kyiv residents surveyed believe war will drag on, but 91% confident that Ukraine will win

KYIV. Oct 24 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Some 91% of the surveyed residents of the capital believe that Ukraine will win the war, in particular, 74% are certainly convinced of this, and only 1% of respondents believe that Russia will win. This is evidenced by data from a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) on October 12-16.

When asked how long the war will last, Kyiv residents surveyed by KIIS answered as follows: “the majority of respondents (55%) believe that the war will continue for more than a year. Another 25% believe that the war will last from six months to a year and only 4% expect the end of the war in the coming months,” says the KIIS press release based on the results of this study.

Sociologists also raised the question of how the situation in Ukraine and Kyiv will change in the coming year. The majority of respondents answered that in the next 12 months they expect the situation to improve both in Ukraine (58% expect changes for the better) and in Kyiv (60%). At the same time, 21% expect the situation in Ukraine to worsen, 15% in Kyiv. The remaining respondents either believe that there will be no changes or found it difficult to answer the question.

Executive Director of KIIS Anton Hrushetsky, commenting on the study, said: “Residents of Kyiv, as well as the population of Ukraine as a whole, despite prolonged military operations, remain highly optimistic – they believe in the victory of Ukraine and in changes for the better in the coming year. At the same time, the majority are optimistic “for a long military campaign. This awareness that hostilities can continue for a long time (and, accordingly, one’s own preparation for this) is an important element of support and preservation of optimism for the future.”

The survey was conducted using telephone interviews; 805 respondents living in all districts of Kyiv were interviewed. The survey was conducted with adults (aged 18 years and older) residents of the capital, who at the time of the survey lived and were registered in Kyiv. Under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample does not exceed 3.5%.
