Loan portfolio of Ukrainian banks decreases by 0.5%, NPL increases by 2.9% in Nov – NBU

KYIV. Jan 3 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The loan portfolio of Ukrainian banks in November 2022 decreased by 0.5%, to UAH 1.169 trillion, while the volume of non-performing loans (NPL) increased by 2.9%, to UAH 429.5 billion, according to reports on the website National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

According to it, the share of non-performing loans in the country’s banking system rose to 36.8% in November from 35.54% a month earlier.

The National Bank said that over the month, the portfolio of loans in the corporate sector dropped by 0.5%, to UAH 870.47 billion (whereas the volume of NPL in it increased 2.4%, to UAH 352.598 billion), and the portfolio of loans issued to individuals, fell by 0.5%, to UAH 239.26 billion (NPL in it grew by 5.3%, to UAH 76.647 billion).

In addition, the volume of interbank loans narrowed by 1.5% to UAH 33.2 billion (and NPL remained at UAH 46 million). The volume of loans issued to public authorities and local governments fell by 1.4% to UAH 25.984 billion (NPL decreased 3% to UAH 234 million).

According to the data of the National Bank, following the results of November, the share of NPL in the portfolio of loans provided to the corporate sector increased by 1.1 percentage points (p.p.), to 40.51%, loans to the population – by 1.77 p.p., to 32.04%, interbank loans remained at the level of 0.14%, and loans to government authorities dropped by 0.01 percentage points, to 0.90%.

According to the report, the loan portfolio of state-owned banks (excluding PrivatBank) decreased 0.02% in November, to UAH 362 billion (the volume of NPL in it increased 4.9%, to UAH 136.219 billion). At the same time, PrivatBank’s loan portfolio grew by 0.3% to UAH 266.57 billion (NPL in it grew by 2% to UAH 188.1 billion).

In addition, the loan portfolio of banks with foreign capital fell by 2% over the month (to UAH 319.39 billion), and with private banks it was down by 0.03% (to UAH 220.956 billion). At the same time, the volume of NPL in foreign banks grew by 3.6% (to UAH 56.518 billion), and in private banks – by 7.1% (to UAH 48.685 billion).

Thus, by the end of November, the share of NPL in the loan portfolios of state-owned banks (excluding PrivatBank) increased 1.78 percentage points (to 37.63%), and in PrivatBank – fell by 0.9 p.p. (to 70.56%). In addition, the share of NPL in the loan portfolios of banks with foreign capital grew by 0.93 p.p. (up to 17.7%), in banks with a private one by 1.48 p.p. (to 22.03%).
