Loan portfolio of Ukrainian banks down by 1%, NPL up by 8.3% in Sept 2022 – NBU

KYIV. Nov 1 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The loan portfolio of Ukrainian banks for September 2022 decreased by 1%, to UAH 1.186 trillion, and the volume of non-performing loans (NPL) decreased by 8.3%, to UAH 339.1 billion, according to a report on the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU).

According to it, the share of non-performing loans in the country’s banking system rose to 33.6% in September from 30.8% a month earlier.

The National Bank indicated that over the month the portfolio of loans in the corporate sector decreased by 1.2%, to UAH 882.914 billion (while the volume of NPL in it increased by 3.3%, to UAH 331.416 billion), while the portfolio of loans issued to individuals decreased by 1.4% – to UAH 244.385 billion (NPL in it grew by 41.3% – to UAH 67.3 billion).

At the same time, the volume of interbank loans grew by 13.6%, to UAH 32.5 billion (and NPL grew 11 times, to UAH 46 million). The volume of loans issued to state authorities and local governments decreased by 4%, to UAH 27.1 billion (NPL increased by 1%, to UAH 248 million).

According to the data of the National Bank, at the end of September, the share of NPLs in the portfolio of loans granted to the corporate sector increased by 1.6 percentage points (p.p.) to 37.54%, loans to the population by 8.3 p.p., to 27.58%, interbank loans – decreased by 0.12 percentage points, to 0.14%, and loans to state authorities – by 0.04 percentage points, to 0.91%.

The regulator’s report indicates that the credit portfolio of state-owned banks (excluding PrivatBank) grew by 1% in September, to UAH 368.316 billion (the volume of NPLs in it increased by 6.1%, to UAH 119.14 billion). At the same time, PrivatBank’s loan portfolio decreased by 0.12%, to UAH 266.959 billion (NPLs by 4%, to UAH 186.988 billion).

In addition, the loan portfolio of banks with foreign capital decreased by 3.5% (to UAH 329.749 billion), banks with private capital – by 1.2% (to UAH 220.706 billion). At the same time, the volume of NPLs in foreign banks increased by 16.8% (up to UAH 50.299 billion), and in private banks by 27.3% (up to UAH 42.519 billion).
