Loan portfolio of Ukrainian banks narrows by 1%, while NPL grows by 4.6% in Oct – NBU

KYIV. Dec 1 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The loan portfolio of Ukrainian banks in October 2022 fell by 1% to UAH 1.175 trillion, while the volume of non-performing loans (NPL) grew by 4.6% to UAH 417.5 billion, according to reports on the website of the National Bank Ukraine (NBU).

According to the NBU, the share of NPL in the country’s banking system rose to 35.54% in September from 33.63% a month earlier.

The National Bank said that over the month the portfolio of loans in the corporate sector dropped by 1%, to UAH 874.448 billion (whereas the volume of NPL in it rose by 3.9%, to UAH 344.49 billion), and the portfolio of loans issued to individuals fell by 1.7%, to UAH 240.361 billion (NPL in it grew by 8%, to UAH 72.756 billion).

At the same time, the volume of interbank loans increased 3.6% to UAH 33.696 billion (and NPL increased 0.1% to UAH 46 million). The volume of loans issued to public authorities and local governments fell by 2.7% to UAH 26.36 billion (NPL dropped by 3% to UAH 241 million).

According to the National Bank, in October, the share of NPL in the portfolio of loans provided to the corporate sector grew by 1.9 percentage points (p.p.), to 39.4%, loans to the population – by 3 p.p., to 30, 27%, interbank loans fell by 0.01 percentage points, to 0.14%, and loans to state authorities remained at the level of 0.91%.

According to the regulator’s report, the loan portfolio of state-owned banks (excluding PrivatBank) fell by 1.7% in October, to UAH 362.081 billion (the volume of NPL in it grew by 9%, to UAH 129.818 billion). At the same time, PrivatBank’s loan portfolio shrank by 0.5% to UAH 265.692 billion (NPL in it grew by 0.4% to UAH 187.722 billion).

In addition, the loan portfolio of banks with foreign capital dropped by 1.1% over the month (to UAH 326.055 billion), while those with private capital grew by 0.2% (to UAH 221.037 billion). At the same time, the volume of NPL in foreign banks rose by 8.5% (to UAH 54.559 billion), and in private banks – by 6.9% (to UAH 45.434 billion).

Thus, by the end of October, the share of NPL in the loan portfolios of state-owned banks (excluding PrivatBank) grew by 3.5 p.p. (up to 35.85%), and in PrivatBank – by 0.6 p.p. (to 70.65%). In addition, the share of NPL in the loan portfolios of banks with foreign capital rose by 1.5 p.p. (to 16.73%), in banks with a private one – by 1.3 p.p. (to 20.55%).
